Question 1 · choose 1

A company must move 200 virtual machines from its data center to AWS before its hosting contract ends in three months. The applications will not be changed during the move. Which migration strategy fits this plan?

  1. ARefactor (re-architect)
  2. BRepurchase
  3. CRehost
  4. DRetire
Show the answer and why
  • ARefactor (re-architect)

    Incorrect

Refactoring changes the application's architecture to use cloud-native features. It is the most complex strategy and the opposite of "no changes".

  • BRepurchase

    Incorrect

Repurchasing replaces the application with a different product, such as a SaaS version. Here the same applications move.

  • CRehost

    Correct

Rehost, also called lift and shift, moves applications to AWS without making any changes to them — what a deadline-driven move of many machines calls for.

  • DRetire

    Incorrect

Retiring decommissions applications that are no longer needed. These applications are still needed; they are being moved.

The 7 Rs are retire, retain, rehost, relocate, repurchase, replatform and refactor. "Move unchanged" is rehost; modernizing can come after the move.

Question 2 · choose 1

A company is planning its move to AWS. Its leaders worry that staff lack cloud skills and that teams will resist new ways of working, so they want a plan for culture, organizational structure, leadership and workforce. Which perspective of the AWS Cloud Adoption Framework (AWS CAF) focuses on this?

  1. APeople perspective
  2. BPlatform perspective
  3. CGovernance perspective
  4. DOperations perspective
Show the answer and why
  • APeople perspective

    Correct

The People perspective bridges technology and business, with a focus on culture, organizational structure, leadership and workforce, so that learning and change become business as normal.

  • BPlatform perspective

    Incorrect

The Platform perspective is about building a scalable hybrid cloud platform, modernizing workloads and implementing cloud-native solutions.

  • CGovernance perspective

    Incorrect

The Governance perspective orchestrates cloud initiatives to maximize benefits and minimize transformation-related risks.

  • DOperations perspective

    Incorrect

The Operations perspective makes sure cloud services are delivered at a level that meets the needs of the business.

AWS CAF groups its capabilities into six perspectives: Business, People, Governance, Platform, Security and Operations. Skills, culture and organization belong to People.

Question 3 · choose 2

A board asks what a cloud transformation could do for the business. According to the AWS Cloud Adoption Framework (AWS CAF), which of the following are key business outcomes of a cloud transformation? (Choose TWO.)

  1. AReduced business risk
  2. BAWS takes over all security responsibilities for the company's workloads
  3. CA fixed monthly bill that stays the same whatever the usage
  4. DStaff no longer need new skills or a new way of working
  5. EImproved environmental, social and governance (ESG) performance
Show the answer and why
  • AReduced business risk

    Correct

AWS CAF names reduced business risk among the key business outcomes, together with improved ESG performance, increased revenue and increased operational efficiency.

  • BAWS takes over all security responsibilities for the company's workloads

    Incorrect

Security stays shared: AWS secures the cloud itself, and the customer remains responsible for security in the cloud, such as its data and access.

  • CA fixed monthly bill that stays the same whatever the usage

    Incorrect

Cloud costs are variable: you pay only when you consume resources, and only for how much you consume.

  • DStaff no longer need new skills or a new way of working

    Incorrect

The opposite: AWS CAF has a whole People perspective for culture, organizational structure, leadership and workforce change.

  • EImproved environmental, social and governance (ESG) performance

    Correct

Improved ESG performance is one of the key business outcomes AWS CAF lists for cloud transformation.

AWS CAF names four key business outcomes: reduced business risk, improved ESG performance, increased revenue and increased operational efficiency.

Question 4 · choose 1

A company runs a self-managed MySQL database on a virtual machine in its data center. During the migration it moves the database to Amazon RDS for MySQL so that AWS handles backups and software patching. The application code does not change. Which migration strategy is this?

  1. ARehost
  2. BRetain
  3. CRefactor
  4. DReplatform
Show the answer and why
  • ARehost

    Incorrect

Rehosting moves the application unchanged, for example the same virtual machine onto Amazon EC2, where the company would still run the database itself.

  • BRetain

    Incorrect

Retaining keeps an application in the source environment for now. This database is being moved.

  • CRefactor

    Incorrect

Refactoring changes the application's architecture to use cloud-native features. Here the application stays the same.

  • DReplatform

    Correct

Replatforming moves an application while adding some optimization, such as moving to a fully managed service. A self-managed database moved to Amazon RDS is the classic example.

"Lift, tinker and shift": the database moves to a managed service so AWS takes over backups and patching, while the application stays as it is.

Question 5 · choose 1

While assessing its application portfolio for a migration, a company finds an old internal reporting tool. It has had no inbound connections for the last 90 days, and no team says it needs it. Which migration strategy fits this application?

  1. ARetain
  2. BRehost
  3. CRetire
  4. DRelocate
Show the answer and why
  • ARetain

    Incorrect

Retaining keeps an application in the source environment, for example because it is not ready to move. Keeping an unused tool running keeps its costs and risks too.

  • BRehost

    Incorrect

Rehosting moves the application to AWS unchanged — paying to run, in the cloud, a tool nobody uses.

  • CRetire

    Correct

Retiring decommissions applications with no business value. AWS lists no inbound connections in the last 90 days as a common sign.

  • DRelocate

    Incorrect

Relocating moves servers to a cloud version of the same platform. It still keeps the application running.

The cheapest migration is the one you do not do. Discovery often finds applications that can simply be switched off.
